More Than a Bucket List Goal
Alaska’s untouched beauty was seriously next-level, and my first cruise very much exceeded expectations. We stopped at some of the must-see ports like Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan, but the real highlight? My parents finally got to check off their ultimate bucket list goal—a full 34 years later! We touched down in Juneau, headed straight for the capitol building, and just like that, they hit all 50 states and U.S. capitols.
Being there with them for such a huge moment was honestly so inspiring, and it gave me a fresh perspective on life. I mean, 34 years is older than I am! This experience was a reminder that even if something takes forever to achieve, it’s totally worth it. We’re all so used to instant gratification these days (guilty), but this made me realize how much value there is in the long game. It’s about enjoying the process—the flights, the research, the planning, the little moments that lead to the big ones. That’s where the magic happens.
Activities and Excursions: What We Got Into
Of course, beyond the life lessons, there were plenty of epic activities. One of my favorite stops was The Empress Hotel in Victoria, Canada. The whole vibe there is so mysterious and historic, with dark purples and a royal ambiance. We had a drink at the bar and grabbed dinner at their fancy restaurant, "Q at the Empress"—so good!
Another highlight was in Ketchikan, the “Salmon Capital of the World.” While my sister and mom went on a shopping spree, my dad and I joined a wilderness tour led by a Native leader who knew the area like the back of his hand. We spotted salmon, bald eagles, bears, and sea lions—it was an outdoorsy adventurer’s dream! If you love nature and wildlife, Ketchikan is a must-see.
Onboard the cruise, there was non-stop entertainment, from live shows to Zumba classes and pool parties. And let’s not forget the food—so many dining options, all with delicious international and local flavors.
Alaskan Cruise: Pros and Cons
Like any trip, there were pros and cons to cruising through Alaska. The best part was how easy it was to get around—our cruise ship was like a floating hotel, so no need to unpack at every new stop. Plus, everything was included: meals, entertainment, activities. It was a super low-stress way to travel.
That said, the limited time at each port was a bit of a downside. I wish we had more than four hours to explore and shop in Victoria (next time, right?). And since you definitely don’t want to risk being left behind, you always have to get back early. Alaska’s weather can also be a wild card—it could be freezing or rainy, but we lucked out with great weather. Still, it’s something to keep in mind when planning.
Final Takeaways
Overall, our Alaskan cruise was the perfect mix of chill and adventure. From the jaw-dropping landscapes to the incredible wildlife and fun onboard activities, it was a trip I’ll never forget. At one point, I was so relaxed taking in the views, I literally fell asleep sitting up!
Sure, there were a few small downsides, but the convenience and variety of the cruise more than made up for them. If you’re thinking about exploring Alaska, a cruise is an amazing way to do it in comfort and style.
Alaska is one of the last great wildernesses, and it’s 100% worth experiencing. If you’re ready for your next adventure, I highly recommend adding it to your travel plans!
